Hints & Myths about Argentine Tango

Second time in Buenos Aires

City Tour / Sights

Take one of the city tour coach trips early in your stay - they cover most of the sights around Plaza de Mayo (casa rosada, cabildo, catedral etc) through to the Bombonera - Boca Juniors playground - and the conventillos of Caminito - lots of tango souvenirs - and will give you an idea of where you want to revisit.

Don't miss the old "English tower" or the flower monument (open by day, closed by night - a gift from an Argentinian architect who now lives here in Cambridge, UK) and the regenerated Puerto Madero docks.

Do think about visiting Evita's tomb (Recoleta cemetery) and, of course those of Carlos Gardel and Juan Peron ( Chacarita cemetery - almost at the end of one of the metro lines). If you are a smoker, help Carlos out with another nicotine fix.

Another "must do" is the flea market at Plaza Dorrego on a Sunday (usually complete with "El Indio" and Mariana doing a few "history of tango" demonstrations before his open air milonga between around 6pm and 8pm); there's also a "tango souvenir" shop there.

We took a taxi up to the Spanish monument in Recoleta one morning then took a few hours peace and quiet in the Japanese Gardens - recommended to clear the lungs! - before walking back through Recoleta / Retiro etc; we also spent time around Florida (shopping), and Corrientes (CDs, theatres etc).

Postcards home? Forget it! Postage is expensive and - whether or not they are put in envelopes - they just don't get here. Well, if you really must - send them from the airport when you get home; better yet, put the Argentine stamp on and deliver them yourself!
