Hints & Myths about Argentine Tango

Second time in Buenos Aires

Shopping, Silver, Shoes, and Souvenirs

Leather goods are very competitively priced - understandable given the number of shops on Florida, as are most things produced locally - inflation has not yet caught up with the 1:3 devaluation. For sales pressure - and a bewildering array of souvenirs - visit Caminito in La Boca.

We tried three (tango) shoe shops; Delie in San Telmo are cheapest and have a good selection; Flabella in San Nicolas is the most fun - chaos, coffee, and chat all come into the decision here; Suipacha 256 is a little more expensive but is better organised and has a wider range of other tango accessories. We bought shoes from all three! All are inexpensive (around $30 to $50 a pair) by European standards and will make to order - but their delivery promises can be optimistic!

There's a lot of silver around of course but the best stuff was bought up a long time ago and silver has a global market so real bargains are few and far between - but you'll have fun looking!

Souvenirs are everywhere; especially in the pedestrianised areas of Florida and Lavalle, but Caminito has to be seen to be believed. It is expanding and the sales staff are used to"helping" tourists quickly make up their minds so they can spend as much as possible in the 20 minute stopover on the tour bus. Expect the same sales person to follow you through what you thought were about ten different shops - there must be tunnels between them!
