Hints & Myths about Argentine Tango

..............................................................................Medium Level Tango

These notes summarise a tango course given in five parts by Rodolfo Aguerrodi & Miho Omaki in Cambridge in 2004. The course was aimed at people with 18+ months experience.

We began with some exercises in rhythm:

walking around the room individually:

    arriving just ahead of the beat to ensure balance

We continued walking side-by-side:

    walking with some contra-time steps by leader, follower walking on the beat

We continued walking side-by-side:

    walking with some contra-time steps by follower, leader walking on the beat

We then walked as couples:

    with Leader including some contra-time steps and follower walking on the beat

We then practised the traditional corte:

    Couples walk offset parallel along LOD;

at a certain moment, in contra-time, the leader bounces back off his forward left foot, opening to his left, drawing his follower forward;

leader pivots 90, in contra-time, and collects facing across LOD as his follower takes an open step in front of him;

leader pivots, in normal time, the couple 90 more and steps out along the LOD in the opposite direction to earlier

We then practised the traditional corte on the other side:

    Couples walk offset parallel along LOD;

at a certain moment, in contra-time, the leader bounces back off his forward left foot, opening to his right, drawing his follower forward;

leader pivots 90, in contra-time, and collects facing across LOD as his follower takes an open step in front of him;

leader pivots, in normal time, the couple 90 more and steps out along the LOD in the opposite direction to earlier

We then individually practised the "bounce":

    On three beats:

push foot forward onto toe;

move onto ball of foot;

pull foot back.

We then worked on our posture, working with a partner;:

    take weight on one leg;

pull lower back in;

squeze stomach up under rib-cage

then seated individually:

    sitting far enough forward to get enough room to move torso back and forth;

push upright torso forward from solar plexus

push upright torso back from solar plexus

then standing:

    push upright torso forward from solar plexus

push upright torso back from solar plexus

Then we worked on standing balance and posture:

    Pull stomach and back in

Take weight on one leg

Lift rib-cage

Swing free leg gently back and forth

Then we worked more on standing balance and posture, trying to emulate letter "J":

    Pull stomach and back in

Take weight on one leg

Lift rib-cage

Push torso forward from solar plexus

Swing free leg gently back and forth
