These notes
summarise a basic workshop on "Tuning
Tango" taught by Jenny Frances and
Ricardo Oria in December 2004.
The lesson
worked on curving steps while maintaining
the couple's connection.

The first workshop
began with some warming up exercises:
|
|
|
| |
|
With
everyone in a circle; each stands on one
foot and rotates the foot from the ankle
and then the leg from the hip until
relaxed, then works on the other leg. |
| |
First we
spent a little time on intention:
|
|
|
| |
|
Leader uses his torso to
offer a movement; the
movement is translated into a movement -
from one position, through a zero-point,
to another position - of the Follower's
legs.
|
| |
First we
practised moving with just linear
forward, side, and backward steps:
|
|
|
| |
|
walking in parallel,
making sure the Leader's left foot passes
his Follower's left foot on alternate
steps. |
| |
Then we
added some curvy forward steps
maintaining connection:
|
|
|
| |
|
walking in parallel,
maintaining the connection; adding the
occasional side step too. |
| |
Then we
moved closer, repeating the above in
close embrace:
|
|
|
| |
|
walking in parallel,
Leader's left foot passing Follower's
left foot, with a mixture of linear and
curving forward and side steps,
maintaining the connection. |
| |
Then we
added some backward steps:
|
|
|
| |
|
walking in parallel,
Leader's left foot passing Follower's
left foot, with a mixture of linear and
curving forward, side, and backward
steps, maintaining the connection. |
| |
Then we
played with the walking turn as a simple
way to reverse direection, perhaps when
we find ourselves opposing the LOD:
|
|
|
| |
|
Begin facing one another
against LOD; Leader
takes a backward step onto his left leg
outward and curving 90 drawing his
Follower forward through 90 onto her
right leg;
Leader
now takes a side step onto his right leg
along the LOD with Follower taking a side
step onto her left leg;
Leader
now pivots the couple 90 and steps
forward onto his left leg as Follower
steps backward onto her right leg both
now face LOD.
|
| |
|
|
|
| |
And a similar
manoeuvre beginning with a Leader's
forward step:
|
|
|
| |
|
Begin facing one another
against LOD; Leader
takes a forward 90 curving step onto his
left leg drawing his Follower backward
through 90 onto her right leg;
Leader
now takes a side step onto his right leg
along the LOD with Follower taking a side
step onto her left leg;
Leader
now pivots the couple 90 and steps
backward onto his left leg as Follower
steps forward onto her right leg both now
face LOD.
|
| |
And,
when there's room, they can be combined
to make a full 360 turn along LOD:
|
|
|
| |
|
Begin facing LOD; Leader
takes a forward 90 anti-clockwise curving
step onto his left leg drawing his
Follower backward through 90 onto her
right leg;
Leader
now takes a side step onto his right leg
along the LOD with Follower taking a side
step onto her left leg;
Leader
now pivots the couple anti-clockwise 90
and steps backward onto his left leg as
Follower steps forward onto her right leg
both now oppose LOD.
Leader
takes a backward 90 curving anti-clockwise
step onto his right leg drawing his
Follower forward through 90 onto her left
leg;
Leader
now takes a side step onto his left leg
along the LOD with Follower taking a side
step onto her right leg;
Leader
now pivots the couple anti-clockwise 90
and steps forward onto his right leg as
Follower steps backward onto her left leg
both now face LOD.
|
| |
And of
course the move can be made beginning:
|
|
|
| |
|
forward, as above,on the
Leader's left leg and turning anti-clockwise; forward
on the Leader's right leg and turning
clockwise;
backward
on the Leader's left leg and turning
clockwise;
backward
on the Leader's right leg and turning
anti-clockwise.
