Cambridge Circles in Tango

These notes summarise a "circles in tango" workshop taught by Jenny Frances and Ricardo Oria in December 2004.

The lesson worked on maintaing the connection while moving around one another.

Th lesson began with some warming up exercises:

    With everyone in a circle; each stands on one foot and rotates the foot from the ankle and then the leg from the hip until relaxed, then works on the other leg.

Then some time with follower walking around her leader with no lead:

    Leader holds his weight on one foot and follows his partner as her moves build rotary tension in his torso.

Then we played with leader and follower taking sets of three steps:

    First a step together;

then one partner steps around the other;

then that partern steps alone.

and a variant:

    First a step together;

then a step around the other partner;

then wait for partner while partner takes a step.

Now we tried something different:

    Leader and follower walk normally in offset parallel until the moment when the leader has his right leg forward and follower has her left leg back but just as her weight is transferred;

Leader pivots his follower 180 and steps back onto his left leg as she steps backwards onto her right leg but just as her weight is transferred;

Leader pivots his follower 180 and steps forward onto his right leg as she steps backwards onto her left leg but just before her weight is transferred ...

Then we repeated the above move adding a system change:

    Leader and follower walk normally in offset parallel until the moment when the leader has his right leg forward and follower has her left leg back but just as her weight is transferred;

Leader pivots his follower 180 and steps back onto his left leg as she steps backwards onto her right leg but just before her weight is transferred;

Leader pivots his follower 180 and steps forward onto his right leg as she steps backward onto her left leg but just as her weight is transferred;

Leader steps across in front of his follower onto his left leg as she transfers weight onto her back left leg;

Walk on along LOD in cross system;

Then we repeated the above move adding some tight turns:

    Leader and follower walk normally in offset parallel until the moment when the leader has his right leg forward and follower has her left leg back but just as her weight is transferred;

Leader pivots his follower 180 and steps back onto his left leg as she steps backwards onto her right leg but just as her weight is transferred;

Leader pivots his follower 180 and steps forward onto his right leg as she steps backwards onto her left leg;

Leader steps around his follower onto his left leg pivoting her 180 on her left leg;

Leader then steps back on his right leg drawing his follower forward around him and onto her right leg;

Leader pivots 90, changes weight onto his left foot, and pivots 90 more as his follower pivots through 180 to emerge along LOD;
