Hints & Myths about Argentine Tango

Cambridge

These notes summarise a basic tango course taught by Rodolfo Aguerrodi and Miho Omaki in October 2001.

There were four 3-hour lessons each usually beginning, Rodolfo-style, with an exercise to improve body control around a critical position from which various moves can be developed.

The second half of the lesson builds those moves progressively. The first and last lessons were focused almost exclusively on exercise and practice respectively.

Lesson 2 began with some tests ..

First we led a series of backward ochos:

    as follower pivots, leader also pivots 90 to walk in cross
    leader gently sacadas each leg of follower while continuing the walk

Then we made life more difficult, starting offset on one side:

    leader turns his torso to bring follower in open step across his front so he is on her other side;

lead follower into giro forward, open, and back steps

exit with sacadas while walking in cross system

Forward ocho exercises reinforcing disconnection:

    begin offset ; keep facing partner while doing forward ochos in opposition

keep facing front while partner holds hands out sidewards from behind

Backward ocho exercises:

    keep facing front while doing backward ochos

Hands touching while doing backward ochos together - pause in each step, pivot, step, pivot scheme

Forward ocho 1:

    walk to side offset; Draw follower forward as leader takes back step

Pivot follower; Draw follower across as forward foot closes and squares up

Forward ocho 2:

    close foot block so follower steps over before coming round to close

Ocho Practice:

    Walk on Right;

rock back and forth;

l's backward ocho ,

bring f round into giro

    Walk on r;

rock b and f;

l's backward ocho ,

bring f into f ocho as above

    Lead f ocho - collect/use body turn so f arrives;

pivot back into ocho and close walk on l;

lead f ocho ;

collect;

use body turn to reverse f before arrival via close to side step ...

    walk on l;

lead f ocho ;

collect;

touch r foot against f's l -

use body turn to reverse follower before arrival via barrida into side step;

f steps over into forward ...
