Hints & Myths about Argentine Tango

Cambridge

These notes summarise a "Medium 3" level course arranged by Mike and Stephanie at the Cambridge TangoBar and taught by Rodolfo Aguerrodi and Miho Omaki in November 2003.

There were five 3-hour lessons each usually beginning with an exercise intended to improve body control around a critical position from which various moves can be developed. The second half of the lesson builds those moves progressively. The first and last lessons were focused almost exclusively on exercise and practice respectively.

Lesson 3 focused on primary - the giro - and secondary leads - barrida etc - to develop our balance, precision and coordination even when displacing our axis

We began with some practice walking backward with a sacada leg lift:

touch - extend a leg to touch the floor on toe/ball

transfer - press the floor to lift slightly as weigth istransferred

lift/collect - lift the forward leg directly to knee height, lowering toi slowly against the back leg.

etc

Then we combined a backward ocho and forward boleo:

lead a backward ocho to leader's left,

complete the ocho on leader's right;

do/undo a forward pivot so she does a forward boleo

lead the follower into backward cross step to leader's left and walk out

etc

and a variation of our sacada:

  Lead giro to leader's RHS;

leader 's left foot/ thigh sacadas follower's trailing left leg on her forward step

leader 's right leg interrupts follower's open step near her left weighted leg but touching the inside of her right thigh so she lifts her leg over his in a sacada

walk out;

and on the other side ...

we reviewed our linear boleo:

  in 3 track cross system

leader 's S-shaped right leg interrupts follower's back step near her right weighted leg but touching the inside of her left thigh so she lifts her leg over his in a sacada/boleo

leader's right leg drops as he transfers weight to undo the sacada/boleo allowing follower to lift her leg and continue backward

and a gancho:

Lead a backward step on one side

Interrupt the collect to create a gancho

Leader straightens his leg into a sacada allowing follower to lift her leg up, over and down

Walk out

Lead a backward step on one side

Interrupt the collect to create a gancho

Leader reverses the giro, straightens his leg into a sacada allowing follower to lift her leg up,

leader leads a forward pivot to lead the forward boleo (over)

leader reverses the pivot to undo (down) the boleo and continue into the back step of a giro on the other side

sacada's follower's trailing leg into LOD

walk out

Then we reviewed how to change track ...

turning leader's chest to left, ahead or right etc

... and change direction:

Leader walks offset along LOD on follower's RHS

With leader's left forward, he leads a 90 anti-clockwise pivot into an open step

As leader's right foot touches lead a 90 anti-clockwise pivot to oppose LOD

cut follower with right leg/ foot into backward ocho on left to start giro on LHS

L waits and walks out in parallel along LOD

Leader walks offset along LOD on follower's RHS

With leader's left forward, he leads a 90 anti-clockwise pivot into an open step

As leader's right foot touches lead a 90 anti-clockwise pivot to oppose LOD

cut follower with right leg/ foot into tight 180 backward ocho on left to align with LOD

L waits and walk out in parallel along LOD

Leader walks offset along LOD on follower's RHS

With leader's left forward, he leads a 90 anti-clockwise pivot into an open step

As leader's right foot touches lead a 90 anti-clockwise pivot to oppose LOD

Cut follower with righ leg/ foot into tight 180 backward ocho on left to align with LOD

continue with giro on LHS to forward step

reverse the giro and barrida follower's forward step back into open step

L waits and walk out in parallel

We then :

Lead a giro to leader's RHS

Barrida on follower's backward step

follower passes leader's foot in forward step

leader cuts follower's line - catches the forward foot drawing his follower's weight forward as he moves forward

both pivot to other side on the same feet

leader barridas follower's foot so they walk out in parallel

etc

and finally tried the cut on any follower forward step:

Follower comes forward on one side

leader catches her lead foot drawing his follower's weight forward as he moves forward

both pivot to other side on the same feet

leader barridas follower's foot so they walk out in parallel

etc

How it started
What you must do first
Getting around
Intertwining those legs
Having real fun
Swirling around the room
No limits
